Quorn, Hawker and Lower Flinders Ranges

The Quorn Railway Station where the Pichi Richi Pass
train departs for Port Augusta and return.

After spending the night in Wilmington Caravan park we departed for Hawker via Quorn. It was not long before we were in Quorn, quite a little oasis in outback SA. After calling into the local General store and camping shop for some essential porta potti additives which we failed to pick up in Adelaide and about 4 other stops! We headed off for Hawker, the gateway to the Flinders Ranges.

We arrived approximately 11.45 am and went to the Hawker Information Centre to check things out. Yes the Oodnadatta Track was still confirmed closed. Our main urgency for being on the track is the Maree Races on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of June 2015. So we can afford to see the Wilpena whilst waiting to see if the roads can be re-opened. The Info Centre and Caravan Park seemed confident it would open.

So we settled for a night in Hawker and then 1-2 nights in Wilpena doing short 4WD trips and bush walks to places of significance.

After setting up the Lunagazer in the Hawker Big 4 Caravan Park and having lunch we decided to do the Moralana Scenic Drive. This is a 93 Km round 4WD trip along the Southern outskirts of the Pound taking in Arkabar Lookout, Black Gap and return to Hawker, see the map below.

This road is private and as long as visitors respect this it provides access to some incredible scenery and wildlife.

The following photos depict the scenery and wildlife we witnessed.

On return to Hawker we visited Jeff Morgans 360 degree painting from St Mary Peak. His work is incredible for which he has won world acclamation for.
